Spurs boss keen for winger to avoid surgery

Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp is crossing his fingers that Gareth Bale does not require back surgery.

The Wales international lasted just nine minutes of Saturday's 1-1 draw with Newcastle with the niggling injury and is now due to see a specialist.

Redknapp has confirmed the 21-year-old has been hampered for some time and he hopes to resolve the issue once and for all.

It remains to be seen how long, if at all, Bale could be out of action for and Redknapp says only Chelsea's Ashley Cole is on a par with the ex-Southampton man.
Hopeful

"We hope he doesn't need surgery," said Redknapp. "I just hope it's not too bad again.

"It's been dragging on for weeks now and we need to sort him out.

"You don't know how long it will be with back injures. He maybe needs a chiropractor or osteopath, someone like that.

"It's a shame because we need him playing, for sure.

"There isn't a better left-sided player anywhere than Gareth Bale at the moment.

"There's only Ashley Cole who would compare with him."
