Montiel crushed in two rounds by heavy-handed Filipino

American-based Filipino Nonito Donaire won the WBC and WBO bantamweight title with second round knockout of Fernando Montiel in Las Vegas.

The former IBF flyweight champion controlled the fight against his more experienced opponent, landing a left hook that briefly stunned the Mexican in first round.

Donaire, clearly hungry for teh knockout, came out blazing in the next and landed combinations before another big left dropped Montiel.

He made it back to his feet but looked unsteady and the referee stopped the contest moments later.

"I needed to be strong but it was the speed that was the key. He left himself open and that gave me the advantage,+ the new champion said.

"I was surprised he got up after I landed that flush shot. I just came out there believing in what I had. I want to be undisputed in this weight class, if not I want to go up in weight."

On the same card American welterweight Mike Jones remained on course for a world title shot with a second successive victory over Jesus Soto Karass.

The Mexican had felt hard done by November's split decision loss but Jones was a more impressive winner this time, cutting Karass over both eyes in the third round on the way to a 117-111, 116-112, 115-113 success.
