Former striker replaces Ranieri for the rest of the season

Roma have appointed former striker Vincenzo Montella as the club's coach for the rest of the season following Claudio Ranieri's resignation.

Ranieri offered to step down on Sunday evening following his team's 4-3 defeat at Genoa earlier in the day when the Giallorossi had thrown away a three-goal lead.

The Serie A club have now turned to Montella to steady the ship for the remainder of the campaign before a decision is made on Ranieri's long-term replacement.

Montella spent a decade on Roma's playing staff before the ex-Italy international retired from professional football in 2009.

The 36-year-old has been working as a youth team coach at the Stadio Olimpico and he will be presented to the media on Tuesday.

The appointment of Montella on an interim basis could fuel speculation that Roma are plotting to bring Carlo Ancelotti back to the club.

Ancelotti spent 10 years of his playing career with Roma and is currently under increasing pressure as manager of Premier League champions Chelsea.

Reports have suggested that Roma could offer Ancelotti a return to Serie A at the end of the season following two years in English football.
