American hit in the pocket for incident during final round in Dubai

Tiger Woods will be fined by the European Tour for spitting during the final round of the Dubai Desert Classic on Sunday.

The European Tour confirmed on Monday that Woods had been found guilty of breaching their code of conduct and will be fined an undisclosed sum.

"Tournament director Mike Stewart has reviewed the incident and feels there has been a breach of the tour code of conduct and consequently Tiger Woods will be fined," the European Tour said in a statement on Monday.

The incident, which happened on the 12th green, came during the course of a disappointing final round that saw the American slip out of contention at an event that he has twice previously won.

He went on to card a three-over-par 75 - his worst-ever round in a regular European Tour event - as he finished in a tie for 20th, seven shots behind eventual winner Alvaro Quiros.

It was not the only time Woods was caught on camera spitting during the week and he was also heard swearing as he failed to end a winless run that stretches back almost 15 months.

The 14-time major champion has also now gone 17 tournaments without a win for the first time since he left the amateur ranks in 1996.

Minor breaches of the European Tour's Code of Conduct normally lead to a £250 fine, but it can go up to £10,000.

Woods was reported to have received a £1.8million appearance fee to return to the event he won in 2006 and 2008. He missed it in 2009 following reconstructive knee surgery and then last year was still taking time out from the sport following revelations about his private life.
