Argentine claims narrow victory in Vegas
Marcos Maidana earned a majority decision over Erik Morales in their junior welterweight meeting in Las Vegas.
The Argentine started and finished the bout on top to take a majority 116-112 116-112 114-114 decision over the three division world champion.
Morales caught a big uppercut in the first minute of the bout which all but closed his right eye.
He had to work hard to get back into the contest and he was buoyed by a good fifth round and rocked Maidana again in the eighth with a strong left hook.
But Maidana, who shocked Victor Ortiz in 2009 and pushed Amir Khan all the way last year, kept coming forward and he produced some great shots in the 11th and final 12th rounds.
That was enough to convince the judges that he was a worthy winner, although a partisan crowd at the MGM Grand Garden Arena did not share their views.
