Second seed suffered three-set defeat
Ryan Sweeting dug deep to upset second-seeded Sam Querrey and reach the next round of the US Men's Clay Court Championships.
Sweeting survived 18 out of 24 break points - including six in the final game of the match - as he recorded a 3-6 7-6 (7-5) 6-3 victory.
Both players were guilty of failing to hold on to their serves during a see-saw encounters, with a run of seven successive breaks spanning the opening two sets.
But despite his own issues with serving, Sweeting was pleased with his performance.
"Overall I was happy with the way I played," Sweeting said. "I started off really slow and he broke me in the first game and served really well.
Stepping in
"I was standing way back on his serves and had no chance to break him. I knew I had to do something so in the second set I started stepping in on his second serve and returned pretty well.
"Then, I couldn't serve."
Sweeting will now take on Teymuraz Gabashvili after the Russian recorded an upset of his own - a 7-6 (7-4) 6-3 winner over eighth-seeded Grigor Dimitrov.
Fourth seed John Isner avoided a shock as he saw off Horacio Zeballos 7-5 6-3, with the American set to face Ivo Karlovic in the third round.
Karlovic, a champion on 2007, powered through with a 6-4 6-1 victory over Igor Kunitsyn.
