Top seed Maria Sharapova as she breezed into the quarter-finals of the GDF Open in Paris.
Sharapova needed 68 minutes to dispatch South African Chanelle Scheepers 6-3 6-1, taking advantage of six of her 10 break point opportunities to eventually overwhelm her world number 44 opponent.
In the only other second round match played on Wednesday, Germany's Julia Goerges joined Sharapova in the last eight as she scored a 6-1 6-4 win over Petra Cetkovska of the Czech Republic.
Spanish eighth seed Anabel Medina Garrigues was the biggest casualty of the first round action, losing a one-set lead to crash 2-6 6-3 6-3 to popular local qualifier Pauline Parmentier.
Seventh seed Roberta Vinci advanced with a 6-4 6-4 win over Simona Halep of Romania, and American qualifier Bethanie Mattek-Sands made round two after beating Germany's Kristina Barrois 7-6 (7/3) 6-2
Christina McHale rounded off a successful day for the US by beating compatriot Varvara Lepchenko 6-4 7-5, and there were also wins for Yanina Wickmayer, Monica Niculescu and Klara Zakopalova.
