England skipper hits unbeaten century as wickets fall elsewhere on day one
England captain Charlotte Edwards delivered a timely maiden Ashes century on Saturday as they ended day one of the first Test against Australia on 181 for eight.
Edwards hit an unbeaten 103 in Sydney, spending over five hours at the crease after her decision to bat after winning the toss had initially backfired.
The tourists slipped to seven for two almost immediately as Ellyse Perry produced a devastating new-ball spell to remove Heather Knight and Caroline Atkins.
Lydia Greenway departed soon after when she was snared by Rene Farrell.
However, Edwards then dug herself in, initially alongside Jenny Gunn and the pair put on a partnership of 65 - the highest of the day.
Gunn eventually fell to Rachael Haynes for 33, with Edwards having to accelerate her scoring as wickets continued to fall around her.
Perry returned to end the day with figures of four for 43, with Edwards and Gunn the only England players to reach double figures.
Edwards had faced 277 deliveries at stumps and said: "I've always wanted to score a Test hundred against Australia so this is definitely one of my career highlights so far.
"We did lose wickets in the middle today, but the lower order helped me along and contributed some important runs.
"I'm looking forward to getting out there again tomorrow and hope we can push past 200."
