Coach in hot water for criticism of World Cup captaincy deferral
Pakistan coach Waqar Younis has been asked to explain himself by his employers after he questioned the decision not to name a captain as part of their World Cup squad announcement.
The selectors' move has raised doubts whether the incumbent Shahid Afridi will be handed the role or if he will replaced by Test skipper Misbah-ul-Haq, who led Pakistan to a 1-0 series win in New Zealand.
Afridi has been leading the side in both the one-day and Twenty20 series for over a year and remains the skipper for the six-match one-day series in New Zealand, which gets under way on Saturday.
Several former players, including all-rounder Wasim Akram, have criticised the Pakistan Cricker Board for deferring the announcement of the World Cup captain, comments which were endorsed by Younis on Wednesday.
But the board have taken exception to the coach's statement and sought clarification.
"We have asked him to give an explanation on his statement that he was surprised by the decision not to announce the captain for the World Cup," said Nadeem Sarwar, media manager of PCB, in The Nation.

Sarwar added that under the PCB's media policy, all team officials and players must avoid giving statements that question the policies of the board.
Shortly after Pakistan completed their 1-0 victory in the two-Test series in New Zealand, Younis commented over the World cup selections and said the PCB should have named the captain for the tournament while announcing the squad.
"This is also surprising to me," said the former paceman.
"I don't know what reasons the board could have for delaying the announcement of the captain. But personally I feel it would have been better to announce the captain with the World Cup team."
