Light-heavies ready to go down a well-trodden path
Promoter Eddie Hearn expects the next Prizefighter champion to go straight into title contention.
The light-heavyweights take centre stage at London's Olympia on January 29, when eight more fighters will battle it out for £32,000, live on Sky Sports HD - and for the first time in 3D.
Commonwealth champion Tony Bellew has already opened the door for a fight with the winner and having seen previous winners Willie Casey and Audley Harrison book themselves world-title shots on the back of Prizefighter succcess and several more win British titles, Hearn expects more of the same.
"Prizefighter is the perfect platform for a fighter to rocket themselves into contention for an immediate title shot," he said.
"We have seen the event lead to World title shots for Willie Casey and Audley Harrison, Commonwealth title shots for Martin Rogan, Sam Sexton, Martin Murray and Ovill McKenzie and British title fights for Gavin Rees and David Dolan.
"The domestic light-heavyweight division is wide open right now and, commercially and deservedly, the next Prizefighter champ will be a perfect contender for any champion."
The latest line-up includes the usual mix of former champions and unbeaten prospects.
Former British super-middleweight champion Tony Dodson heads the line-up and is the favourite, but Prizefighter rarely goes to form.
If that is the case on Janaury 29, Hearn insists there is enough talent on display to continue the Prizefighter success story.
"We have a mix of unbeaten, young and experienced boxers taking part," he said.
"Tony Dodson has the experience of high pressure fights, whereas the likes of Llewellyn Davies, Travis Dickinson, Menay Edwards and Billy Slate have their unbeaten records to protect.
"One thing they all share though is a burning desire to be a champion."
