Barca restore five-point gap; Depor goalkeeper on the scoresheet

Barcelona restored their five-point lead at the top while Deportivo relied on their goalkeeper to salvage a point on a busy evening in the Primera Liga.

Leaders Barca were forced to work hard for their win by a determined Athletic Bilbao, who pushed Pep Guardiola's men to the limit but were ultimately beaten 2-1.

David Villa scored inside four minutes but it was cancelled out by Andoni Iraola's penalty shortly after the break.

Lionel Messi finally breached the Bilbao defence 12 minutes from time, his 25th league goal of the season, to the relief of the Camp Nou faithful.

Earlier in the day, Osasuna were shock 4-0 winners over Espanyol at Reyno de Navarra.

The relegation-threatened hosts held a narrow lead at the break, courtesy of a Javad Nekounam strike, before the floodgates opened up in the second-half.

Nekounam grabbed his second from the spot and late goals from midfield duo Lolo and Fernando Soriano ensured a comfortable victory, leaving Osasuna just one point from safety.

Incredibly, Deportivo goalkeeper Daniel Aranzubia secured a point for his side as he popped up with an injury-time equaliser in a 1-1 draw with Almeria.

Pablo Piatti had given the hosts a lead early in the second-half, but Aranzubia took the liberty to attack, making his way forward to nod in a Pablo Alvarez corner.

Elsewhere, Villarreal will be disappointed having conceded a late equaliser at home to basement club Malaga in a 1-1 draw at El Madrigal.

Marco Ruben opened the scoring for the hosts in the first-half but it was cancelled out by a Sebastian Fernandez strike eight minutes from time.

Meanwhile, Racing Santander eased their relegation worries with a creditable 1-0 away win over Getafe, who had Ivan Marcano sent off late on.

The defender was dismissed for a professional foul, handing the visitors a penalty, which was dispatched in the 89th minute by Pablo Pinillos.

At Estadio Ramon Sanchez, Sevilla secured a narrow 1-0 win over Hercules, with Ivan Rakitic providing the sole strike.
